Ahhhh Turkey! Want to know what the best part of being in Turkey is? It's not the desert! There are paved sidewalks and streets here, the houses and everything around you is not brown, taxi drivers don't honk at you when you're walking down the street, and there is the option of having a few cocktails too! I feel like I'm back in civilization!
The trip here was pretty nice - except for that whole 4 am flight thing. When we landed in Cairo I had my first beer in over 3 months. I was going to count the days, but that would require too much effort at this point and time. It was 6:30 in the morning and the best breakfast I've had in months!
When we landed in Istanbul we ended up renting a van instead of a taxi to take us to our flat. We have a nice little apartment on the 10th floor in Akatlar. The view is amazing!
On Friday we hung around the apartment for a while, then went out for a walk in the rain. It was lovely. I miss the rain - and it's not that it doesn't ever rain in Kuwait, it's just a dirty rain because of the sand/dust in the air. Here it was clean and fabulous.
We stopped at a cafe and Lindsay asked the man to bring us a Turkish dinner, so he did:
It was pretty dang good! We then walked a little more and found a store that sold wine. Yes please! We went back to our flat and had a couple of drinks and were all in bed by 8. We were tired!
On Saturday we slept in. Then we headed to Bebek. It's a small town near here. The way there was down a hill on curvy streets. We went there because you can walk along the Bosphorous.
The view walking down the hill.
We're standing in Europe, and Asia is across the water. Istanbul spans both Europe and Asia. We're staying on the European side.
There are guys all over the place carrying these trays with some delicious looking bread on them.
On our walk we came up to the Romeli Fortress. We went in and did some exploring:
Please note that there are no safety features on these stairs. They were something else, especially the higher you climbed!
Why yes, yes we did have fun. Why do you ask? And believe me, these pictures are tame compared to some of the other ones that will not be posted publicly...we played fashion photo shoot and, well, models we are not!
The amphitheater.
While we were at the Rumeli Fortress this guy came up to us. Those things that look like grapes are actually dates. He was sharing with us. Unfortunately, he didn't tell us not to eat the skin until after I had put the whole thing in my mouth. There's a bush behind me that has leftover date all over it...
