Thanksgiving in the Desert

Thursday November 24, 2011

Happy Thanksgiving! A group of us got together to have Thanksgiving later Thursday night. We each brought something to share, so we had almost all of the main stays of Thanksgiving dinner. Except turkey and cranberries. For real! And Helmers clan, I was sad to realize that I had no corn in my cupboards for my mashed potatoes. I did manage to survive, but it just wasn’t quite the same!

That morning in school, I had a student ask if I had a turkey. I said no, because those of us who are new did not know that you had to order it from one of the grocery stores, the plus side of this is that they cook it for you. By the time we found out, it was too late and we didn’t know anyone on the army base to get one. We decided to have chicken instead, so we had 4 cute little chickens. The student who offered to get me a turkey said that it would be nice and soft and warm. Suspecting something was up (because he loves to tease me and get me to believe his lies) I asked him why it would be so warm. His response? Because it would be alive. Can you imagine me killing a turkey and cleaning it? Yeah, no. I thanked him for his offer and told him to keep his turkey. He thought he was so funny, especially after he started to describe the easiest way to kill it!

Our appetizer set up. I brought the veggie tray with the pickles. I was really disappointed that I couldn't find kosher baby dill pickles. I did find kosher dill spears, so I figured I could manage. And then I ate one. I kind of missed the fact that they were made with Tabasco! Now, many of you know how much I love my Tabasco, but I DO NOT love it on pickles. The end.

We had a lovely dinner (I made the mashed potatoes and they turned out great) and dessert. Rick made a pumpkin pie, Maddy made cheesecake, and Ash brought bakery items. Oh was it good!

Lindsay testing the chicken to make sure it was ok :)

Rick made a pumpkin pie from scratch. He brought the filling over and baked them while we ate. Fresh pumpkin pie people!

Rina is from Japan (she was there when the Tsunami hit – I asked her about it and she said that she thought she was going to die that day -so scary!) and had never celebrated an American Thanksgiving before. She said she was so full she could hardly walk. I told her that it was tradition and not to worry :)

A VERY full Rina!

After dinner, a few of us went out to smoke some sheesha. I hadn’t been out to smoke sheesha at all since being here, so I decided to go along even though it was already 11:30. That is WAY past my bedtime these days. I figured that since I have a long weekend I could manage (the Islamic New Year is Saturday, and we found out earlier this week that school is cancelled for Sunday – WOOT!). We were out until 2:30. I haven’t been up that late since my going away party!

All in all, it was a really nice holiday. Good food, good friends, and a little sheesha to end the night!
