We're in the middle of week 4 of the current school year, my 3rd year in the desert. I realized the other day that I haven't posted about Spring break and Fall break is almost upon us! I will try and get to it....although it probably won't be as detailed as Greece was. It might be an eye-candy post ;)
This school year has brought about some interesting changes. I am now teaching some Juniors and Seniors in a class called, The Art of the Fairy Tale, that I proposed and am currently developing. It's been an interesting and valuable learning experience working with the older students. It's also been a little stressful creating the schedule for the course content and assignments from scratch. I am looking at it as an opportunity to grow, and plan on improving the structure before the Spring semester starts (because then I will also be teaching a Mythology class - SUPER excited about my course content this year :) ). Even though they're older, they constantly remind me that they're still teenagers, as the comment I received today was, "Miss, I don't know what any of these words mean!" Me: "It's called a dictionary - you might want to locate one." Or, the other kid who asked if there was a summary of the assigned chapters online. Nope! Insert evil laugh....
The times of our classes have also changed. For the last two years we taught on the block schedule. This year we are on a rotating schedule that looks a little like this:
On Sunday, classes are 40 minutes. The students have a break after their C class for 20 minutes. Lunch happens between F and G. The rest of the week, they have 55 minute classes, with 10 minute passing periods. Lunch occurs after the 4th class of the day. It has been an interesting adjustment, particularly since I teach a D-E double class of English 9. (Also G-H, but it doesn't split like D-E does). I've had to change the way I post due dates because it's not always the same for each class. I now post them by Day (1, 2, 3, or 4). The school has also gone to a no bells system (slightly a lie - the bell rings to starts the day, signify the end of lunch, and the end of the day). At first, I was leery, but it hasn't been all that bad. I've had to set alarms in my phone to ring so I know when to let my students go, but other than that it's been fairly smooth.
As far as activities go, Forensics and Debate is starting up this week. It's going to be a busy season - my school is hosting the tournament this Fall, so there will be some extra work involved. Should be fun!
