Tutoring and a Mani/Pedi - Why Not? Well...

October 28, 2011

On Monday I was waiting for the driver of the student I am tutoring to come and pick me up. When he was 10 minutes late I called his mother. She wasn’t in the country, so she gave me their home number. I called and the maid answered. I asked if said student was there and she said he was sleeping. I said, “I was supposed to be picked up 10 minutes ago, and is anyone coming?”

Her response? Can I have your number and call you back.

Okay…

Not even five minutes later she called back (should I clarify that this was the maid?) and asked if the day after tomorrow would be okay. I said yes, and then I also said that I didn’t appreciate waiting around for someone to come and pick me up and that I had missed the last bus home. Ah-hem. You know how pleasant I can be, right? Yeah…. I was kind of waiting for a phone call to tell me to not come back!

Luckily another teacher had stayed late and we shared a cab back. It’s not so bad when that happens!

Tuesday I worked late. I had a meeting after school about re-accreditation. I, the silly fool that I am, volunteered to be on the committee. That was not a smart decision on my part. Extra work? Why not!?!?! It’s not like I’m not always feeling behind right now anyways!

I feel like there was something else going on, but it is escaping me at the moment…

Wednesday I left my key at the gate for my maid. For real! Hopefully one of these days I can devote a post to the glory of having someone clean up the fucking dust in my apartment.

School was the usual, then I stayed after for the staff photo. I find it vastly entertaining that it took longer to take the staff photo than it did the 9th grade class photo. The kids took about 20 minutes the day before, but the staff took over ½ an hour. Apparently teachers can’t tell time or follow directions :)

When I got back to my classroom the student that I am supposed to be tutoring was standing outside of my classroom. He said that his cousin was in an accident and was at the hospital. He also said that all of their parents were out of the country. What could I do? I said go see your cousin. I’m not going to quibble with him on that. Earlier Lindsay had asked if I wanted to go get a mani/pedi with her. I told her it would depend on my student. Since he cancelled, I figured, why not? I wear sandals almost every day and my feet are not looking very pretty.

Well. First of all, the salon is new, so the cab driver had no idea how to get there. (I love that the cab drivers ask us how to get places. Really? Do I look like I know?) After driving in a few circles we got there. Lindsay’s friend Tina (the owner whom she had met at a party the week before) met us outside. She took us into this building and the ‘salon’ was on the second floor. It most definitely used to be an apartment.

Tina is from Ethiopia. She’s been in Kuwait for about 8 years. She used to hate it, but she likes it much better now. The girls who work for her were really nice. One was from Ethiopia and has been here for 3 months. She hates it here, but doesn’t want to go back. I think this is a stopping point for her! The other girl is from India. She has a child back there and she sends money home. They were very thorough in their job. They were so thorough that it took 3 HOURS for Lindsay to get a mani/pedi and for me to get a pedi. My toes are beautiful, but I couldn’t believe how long it took!

I had been hoping to get home at a decent hour and get to bed early. I should know better by now! Another late night for me. I can say that we won’t be back to that salon. While they were nice, it just wasn’t quite the experience either one of us was looking for. You live and you learn, right?

Thursday I had another near-accident experience on the way to school. Our bus was moving along in its own lane (WOW!) and a bus in the lane next to us decides to just start coming on over. Right next to us. I hate it when I can see the whites of people’s eyes in the vehicle next to me. Our driver started honking and waving his arms at the other driver. The other driver sped up and passed us. Then our driver sped up and passed him and waved his arms around at the other driver again. Let me tell you, that woke me up! It also reminds me that I was going to write a post on the do’s and don’ts of giving the finger here…

I, of course, stayed until the last bus home. I ate a little dinner and finished my book, Poison by Sara Poole. Pretty good – it’s about a female poisoner working for the Borgia family. Then I went to hang out with Maddy, Lindsay and Rina. We just sat around talking. We could have gone to a party, but seriously, I was way too tired. There’s a Halloween/Birthday party tonight. We’re going.
