Today I met with a kid for a potential tutoring job. I had talked with his mother over the previous couple of days, and we had decided on their driver coming to pick me up at 5 pm at the school to take me to their house.
Yes, you read that correctly, their driver came and picked me up.
He pulled up to the curb outside of the school in a big black Ford Explorer and asked if I was Ms. Johnson. It was sweet that he asked, as I was the only female on the sidewalk in a 2 block radius. I said, “Yes,” and asked if his name was Kajah. It was, so we were golden. (I still had no phone. I’m not gonna lie, the potentially horrific scenarios that could happen ALL went through my head).
We got to their house about 25 minutes later. Traffic, you see!
Holy HOUSE! I felt way too rude to take a picture. That and the maid was there to let me in before I even made it up to the door. Suffice it to say, the glimpse that I had of their kitchen tells me that it is bigger than my apartment. Talk about feeling out of place!
I met the student. He’s in 11th grade. We discussed time and dates. I asked what he was working on. He told me, and so we proceeded to discuss ethos (credibility), pathos (emotional appeal) and logos (logic) for a letter he needed to write for class. It was a good discussion. His mom also came in and said hi. She also asked me how much I charged. When I told her, she made a bit of a grimace, but my time is valuable and I have no intention of spending an hour tutoring plus an hour and a half in the car twice a week for a small amount of money. It takes about an hour to get back to Mahboula from where they live, and honestly, 3 hours in the car is valuable relaxation on my couch time. I don’t need the tutoring money/job, but I would like one. You know how I can’t stand being bored!
As far as I know, Kajah is picking me up on Monday the 24th at 4:30 outside of school. I’ll have to call his mom to give her my number. Here’s hoping it all goes well!
