Appliances & Neighbors

Day 5: September 13th, 2011

Day 3 of school. It is already becoming routine! I also attended my 1st faculty meeting as a full-fledged staff member. Woot?! At least there were snacks :)

A story that has nothing to do with school:

For the past three days I have been attempting to do my laundry. I figured out how to turn the power on in my mini laundry room. Of course it was a light switch in the hallway, and why wouldn’t it be the furthest one from the room? I mean, how silly am I? I had put my clothes in the machine each day, turned on the power switch, set the temperature and the spin speed (I think anyways, I’m still working on that one). And then I waited. It made horrific noises and never filled with water.

Just a small problem, right?

There are three (yes, three) separate water spouts in my little laundry room.

The guest shower:)
I believe this is to wash your feet with. I also have one of these next to the toilet in my bathroom. It's a poor person's bidet!!!

Not a single one of them was attached to the washing machine by a hose. I thought that for some strange reason they would be hooked up in the wall somehow, so I tested them one by one. The only thing I learned from that exercise was that they all will pour a lot of water all over the floor, and that none of them made a difference with the washing machine. I also learned that the drain in my laundry room floor works.

Score!

Reason #1 I’m Grateful for My Neighbors:
On the way back from school, I met one of my neighbors in the elevator. His name is Brad. I asked him if he knew anything about the washing machines, and how they worked. He said he’d take a look at it for me.

Apparently, the big blue thing on the wall behind my washing machine is the water source.

I would have known this if I could read Arabic, but I am SO not there yet! He flipped some little switch, and voila! Water now fills in the washing machine!

Further issues:
1. What to do with the ungodly noise it makes.
2.To figure out what the numbers and pictures on the front mean.

You’d think it would be fairly self-explanatory, but sometimes my clothes are spun very well, and others they’re not (and yes, on the same cycle). I guess that’s why I have towels on the floor under my drying rack!

Day 6:

Day 4 of school. I had a student tell me that she loves coming to my class because it goes by so fast! Score! I know that all of my students definitely do not feel that way, but it’s always nice to know when you’ve got at least a few that are engaged and learning!

Reason #2 I’m Grateful for My Neighbors:
I had a pizza I bought from the grocery store a few days ago in my fridge. So sue me - I have few kitchen supplies and am usually too tired to cook. I was really wanting to eat it, so I figured I should figure out how to work my oven. You see, dear friends, that my stove and oven are gas. And I have to light it myself, with matches. Now, although I love to cook, I have never had to light a gas oven or stove. I was also not terribly excited about using a match and sticking my arm in the oven. I knocked on Megan’s door, who lives beside me. I asked her if she’d used her oven yet, and if she knew where you were supposed to light it. She hadn’t, but she did have one of those fabulous long lighters. She brought it over, we looked in the oven, decided on a plan of attack, I turned on the gas, and she turned away as she stuck the lighter in the oven. It worked, and neither one of us was burned or further scarred in any way.

I know, I know. You've been waiting for pictures and all you get is my lousy laundry room! There will be more...eventually!
