Day 7: Thursday
The end of week 1! I made it, although my schedule has been:
• Get up at 4:15
• Get on the 5:15 bus to school
• 7:15 – 2 is school
• There are 3 buses after school: 3, 3:45 or 4:15. Depending on the day depends on which bus I take. I generally stay for one of the last two.
• I would get home, take a nap, have some toast while watching half a movie, and go to bed around 8.
Such an exciting life I lead! Part of this is jet lag, but the other part is that getting up a little after 4 in the morning is NOT a time I am used to. Not yet anyways! (It's now been a few weeks...and getting up at 4 is still not fun!)
Day 8: September 16th, 2011
Friday! The first day of my weekend. For real! Weekends in Kuwait are Friday – Saturday. Friday is the Holy Day (like Sunday back home). Most other Middle Eastern countries have their weekends as Thursday – Friday. It’s just one of those interesting cultural differences!
Jet lag is killing me. I was up at 5 am, without an alarm. :( I decided to be productive, since I had no internet. I made a pot of coffee and graded papers for a few hours. I also did a little prep work for Sunday.
I finished the book, Eon by Alison Goodman. I then started and finished the sequel, Eona. I highly recommend them!
The school also has a book club. I decided to participate for a few reasons:
1. Most of the books looked really interesting.
2. I’ve always wanted to be in a book club!
3. I figured it would be a good way to meet like-minded people!
We met in the Assistant Principal’s apartment. Let me just say, if you have a family here your apartment will NOT be lacking in space or a view. I am looking forward to getting my apartment in the Singles Building next year! It won’t be as big as the Family apartments, but they are nicer than what I have now. Which, by the way, is actually nicer than I was expecting. I didn’t want to have insanely high expectations, only to be completely disappointed.
There were only 5 of us, but we just sat around and talked about what we liked and didn’t like about the book (Small Island by Andrea Levy). It was very unpretentious and non-judgmental. It was just what I was looking for! There were also snacks. One of the ladies, Sarah, made cookies and brought them. Sarah loves to bake, and I am very willing to sample what she makes! There have been others, which will be shared in the future!
