I Skyped with Robin for 4 hours this morning. It’s amazing how much we can talk, and sometimes it’s about nothing. Last week I supervised her while she was baking stuff for a bake sale. This week we surfed the internet and chatted. She was probably shopping and I was starting to think about if I want to go anywhere for Eid. The first full week in November is my fall break. I just *might* have my civil i.d. by then. I got an e-mail this past Wednesday saying that most of the new hire passports had been stamped and that they were just waiting for the civil i.d.’s to come in during the next 7 – 10 days before they hand them out. I am not totally expecting mine because I was late, but it would be nice!
I also helped her pick out her outfit to wear when she goes out with the other Navy wives tomorrow night. I’m helpful like that! I love Skype! It is especially entertaining when it freezes up on us and we always have the weirdest facial expressions going on…
I went to the area with one of the Lulu Hypermarkets with Maddy and Rick. We wandered around this little store that was similar to a K-Mart. It had a bunch of crap, but you could find some gems! I got a pasta strainer, the lotion that I like (if you find something you like and use, buy it!) and a glass baking dish for really cheap. I had been looking at the Pyrex, but the individual pieces start at $15 (for the small ones). The one I got was much cheaper. We’ll see how it goes!
Then we stopped by a fruit market. It’s right across the street from Lulu’s. Over here, the stores that specialize in something (like fruit) generally have better prices than the large stores that carry everything. I found some delicious looking broccoli (it looks terrible in the other stores) and asparagus (that was expensive, but I am craving veggies over here) and I also got a bundle of parsley. The bundle was HUGE, and I really didn’t want that much. One of the workers was helping me, and the other guy was weighing it. (Over here, you pick out your vegetables and fruit and take it up to a person who is working in the produce section. They weigh your items and tag them. It definitely cuts down on check-out time.) The guy weighing it didn’t want to break it up, but the guy helping me talked him into it. He cut the string on it, separated it, and asked me if that was ok. I said it was, then he asked me what I wanted to pay for it. I think I looked at him strangely, and they were serious. I couldn’t even read the freaking sign for it because it was in Arabic. I had no idea if the number, which I think was 50 fils, was for the bundle or per kilogram. (Note to self: learn the freaking metric system. Gah!)
I said 100 fils. He priced it at .075 fils. I paid around 50¢ for the prettiest bunch of fresh parsley I’ve seen here. Now, to find some fresh sweet basil…
Then we went to Lulu’s. I finally found a yoga mat! Score! It’s not a very thick one, which is what I wanted since my floors are tiles, but I shall survive! I saw 5 other teachers there, and I know Maddy and Rick saw others that I didn’t. Friday is a typical shopping day around here.
Now I’m just sitting around in my clean apartment with a stocked fridge typing up this post that won’t go up for a while because I have so many before it. Hopefully I’ll catch up soon, and then we can all be on the same week at least!
