Cooking in My Tiny Kitchen

First, a short tour of my kitchen:

My refrigerator! Yes, it is actually small. I am about a foot taller than it! This picture is taken from the opposite side of my kitchen (next to my stove). When I walk into my kitchen the front of the fridge is the first thing I see.

This is what I see when looking to the left in my kitchen from the doorway. I couldn't get a good picture of it from inside the kitchen, because it's too small!

My kitchen counter and sink and cupboards. It's maybe four feet wide. Maybe. And yes, I can about fit a cutting board and the veggies I want to cut on the counter. It's a bit tricky!

Guess what's above my sink? You'll never guess!

A hot water heater, of course! How silly are you? Why wouldn't it be ABOVE the sink?

Isn't it pretty? I'm pretty much over my fear that it will come crashing down on me. Pretty much...

My tiny little stove/oven! When I got here the pots and the little tea kettle were already here. They were, however, sitting on top of the glass cover. I use this as a prep area sometimes (when the cover is down) since my counter is so HUGE! Please note that the pots don't have any sort of handle...

This is the gas for my oven/stove. Isn't it so very nice looking? :) This is underneath my sink on the right-hand side. Please note that the bottom of the cupboard is cracked and broken. It is like that all the way through the entire bottom cabinet. Le sigh. One of my goals is to get a shelf of some sort for my kitchen. One of these days I'll get back to Ikea!

My First Cooked Meal in My Apartment: September 19th, 2011

The thing that’s great about Kuwaiti grocery stores is that you can find many American brands. I’m not going to lie, it’s a very comforting feeling! The problem is you never know what they’re going to have, and for how long they’ll have it.

They also have certain things that can be very difficult to find. One group of items is anything for Mexican food. If you something, buy it, because they may not have it the next time you’re there! Another example, Erin K. wanted pumpkin pie last Thanksgiving. There was no pumpkin pie filling to be found in Kuwait in November. In January, it was abundant. She now has 6 cans in her cupboard and has said that she will not be sharing :) Maybe she’ll be talked into it in November, but we’ll see!

I was really excited to find Ragu spaghetti sauce here. They don’t have the exact type that I prefer (tomato with basil and olive oil) but I found the parmesan one. Beggars can’t be choosers here! They also have the wheat noodles I like: Healthy Harvest brand. They were linguini instead of spaghetti, but really, I don’t care THAT much!

Remember how I said to note the pots with no handles? Can you imagine why? If you guessed: because I was halfway through cooking my dinner when I realized I didn't have any pot-holders you would be correct! I did find a few towels to use, and I didn't burn myself, but it was not a happy thought at the time!

Yes, these are exciting things in my life!

Dinner is served!
